DIY deodorant

 

 

i did this a few months ago but wanted to share my experience and thoughts with you...

My initial search for DIY deodorant recipes started because I have this weird itchy pit problem..i know-it sounds weird but it's true and I just don't know any other way around not telling you that... because of this I searched to find a solution and this is what I came to...and call me crunchy but i'm TOTALLY weirded out by the aluminum in deodorants and since i believe that EVERYTHING gives you cancer-im gonna steer away from putting that element very close to a lady part that is the leading cancer in women...just my opinion....anyway...

Here's the recipe i used and my thoughts after using it a few months...

DIY deodorant:

5 cocoa butter chips
2 tsp chunk beeswax
2 heaping tsp coconut oil
2 tsp baking soda
2 heaping tsp arrowroot
1 tsp clay
15 drops essential oil(I used orange)

-Locate and clean a deodorant container then set aside.
-Mix all ingredients in small glass jar
-Heat in microwave in 30 second increments, mixing in between until all ingredients are completely melted.
-Pour into empty container
-Let sit until it solidifies
-Done

initial thoughts:

man, that was super easy to whip up..

 it smells like chocolate and orange- the chocolate smell was not expected.

thoughts after a couple months...im nearing the end of the container and still loving it-you have to reapply like other natural deodorants/especially if you are particularly active.  I did notice for a few weeks in there a few weeks after I made it that it was leaving a grease stain on the pits of my shirts-ones that I worked out in or was active in especially...i have not noticed it as of late...

will i make another batch? more than likely, but i might try a mint essential oil next time around..

Circus Dress

As I was looking at my fabric the other day to make the quilt; I came across this fabric in my stash...

At first thought I was thinking about just getting rid of it-but then-i thought of pinterest again- and remembered I saw a dress on there that I might could make out of it...so off to the sewing machine I went. 

I cut these- a square and a rectangle-...again I didn't measure..(that's gonna get me in trouble soon I know it) I just placed a dress of P's on top and cut a square around it...

 

 I then sewed the sides together and hemmed it.  What makes this dress so easy is that the elastic makes the form for the dress.  I added elastic to the top and to the sleeves. 

 

I felt it was still a little plain when I got done so I added the pocket for detail.  

 

P loved it and kept putting all sorts of things in the little pocket...

Vintage Sheet Blanket

 I was burning some time on pinterest and saw this super cute photo of a baby quilt made out of vintage sheets.  I thought to myself Hey-I have alot of those and it looks simple enough that I might could do it once P went down for nap... so...that's exactly what happened...

I found a bunch of sheets that didn't necessarily match -what fun is that- and started cutting.  I had no rhyme or reason as to what exactly I was doing other than that I had a vintage square napkin, cut that into 4 and there was my pattern.  I used that square to cut the rest of the squares (30 total-roughly 4 of each design)

5 squares in width and 6 squares in length.  Finished product came about to be 40" x 48"

 Next I took all the little squares so sewed them together-first across and then down. 
Once I got it all sewn, I laid it onto another sheet and cut backing.  To make it think I used batting and sewed it all together.  I also added some vintage lace I got from my grandma to give the edges a more complete look.  

 

And done-all before she woke up! I am happy her room has a little more flair and a homemade touch :) 

Onesie making for my little guy

 I'm getting really excited about him can you tell? ;) I have several ideas brewing that I want to make and do for Finley...my form of nesting I suppose... 

I took the opportunity to go out for the afternoon to have some alone time since Paul needed to get some work done in quiet here at the a.p.t. and Piper was sleeping.  I went to Tuesday Morning and found these iron ons for just $0.29 a piece! Heck yeah! 

I knew I had a few white onesies at the house that I wanted to do something just like this with so I checked out and headed right home to work before P woke up from nap... Super simple project and I'm very pleased with the outcome... 

Here's how it all went down-

 

 Materials- white onesie and iron ons (iron and ironing board)

 

 Cut out your letters

 

Arrange on onesie

 Use on wool setting and press front then back for about 10-20 seconds each.

Peel plastic off and done...LOVE how it turned out.  I can't wait to make more.   Do you guys have any ideas for cute wording on baby onesies?

Quick Afternoon DIY

Sometimes I just have the itch to create.  And with a little budget; I have to be very creative... so here's a little DIY for the afternoon.  I literally did this in about 20 minutes start to finish. 

Grab some material scraps, scissors, spray adhesive, and clothes pins and take a seat. 

Cut Scraps a little bigger than clothes pin top

 

Spray on adhesive and sick to pins

 Cut around pin to shape and done!

I cut out alphabet letters F-I-N-L-E-Y and clipped them on some twine for detail for his room :)

Making Lemonade- DIY Dress

 

We've all had it happen to us in one way or another, and if it hasn't yet it will.... Ruined clothes!  Take a look at my brand new $20 tank top.  I was given a gift card to Motherhood Maternity and thought I might use it to get some clothes.. I ended up buying 2 dresses and 2 tank tops.  Here's one of the tank tops.  I loved it because it was flowy and light and brand new.  I wore it once.. and then I washed it...and when I opened the washer it was wound so tightly around the agitator that I couldn't get it off.. Paul came to the rescue and gently got the shirt off the agitator.  And then I saw it...RIPPED! I was so sad.  It got looped around the agitator in the wash and RIPPED the top of the shirt...SEE?

 

So..I got really upset..because I hardly ever buy clothes for myself brand new much less spend $20 for a tank top and I'm frugal so don't judge my upset-ness. Sweet Paul immediately thought..Hey you can make P something...so I did...

 

I took a dress she already had and used it as a pattern to cut the shirt to her size.  I left the edges raw because it's T-shirt material so it won't fray.  So the only sewing I did was up the sides to close them and the detail on the front.  

For the detail on the front I used thin elastic and wound it around a bobbin and popped it in.  Cut 1 1/2 inch wide strips from the scraps and then sewed them on and the elastic kind of gathered it together for me...I did 5 or 6 strips close together. I then tied a knot at each shoulder to close those.  And that's it. Easy Peasy.

DIY-Old to New Crayons!

Have tons of broken crayons laying around you don't want to throw away but have no use for? Or would you just love something different from plain and boring? Well do I have a DIY for you!

These are also great for little hands that can't quite grasp a pencil thin crayon just yet!

Here's what you do:

Divide pile of crayons into separate cups according to color family

Peel paper off of all crayons..

Melt colors in pot

Pour melted wax into molds

Let dry until wax is pulling away from sides. (These should easily pop out)

Place in cute bag to give as a gift or start coloring away!!

 **The Reality:

It's messy and takes a while if you're only using one pot.  Clean up wasn't too bad once the wax dried, I just had to scrape it off with a spatula. 

 But she had so much fun coloring with all her SHOES!

Something out of nothing

DIY ironing board tutorial

Materials:
Any old fabric
Any old wood
Mail packing (what we used)
Or any 'ol batting
Some elastic

Nail together pieces of wood totaling 10 in wide and 3 ft tall

Glue batting over wood

Make a little cover using fabric and elastic

(I simply laid the fabric over the form an cut around the it- leaving 4inch seam allowance all the way around)

...the end.

I love the sense of creating something from nothing or old otherwise unusable items

I love finding a need. And then fulfilling that need.

I love a creative mind that can do that.

I love my husband.

He sees something that's junk to me as useful items worthy to be something great.

That reminds me of Jesus.

He took something otherwise worthless, and created something beautiful and new.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! (2 COR. 5:17)
Remember today that you are a new creation...And smile :) because you've got something to smile about :)

Mustache Mania-DIY

Mustaches fake, anyway have made a big comeback! Why? Well I'm not exactly sure, but it does make me laugh when an unexpected mustache sneaks in and surprises you!

Anyway...with this awesome inspiration I decided to make little unexpected mustache shirts for my nephews..

Take a plain shirt like this one, (target for around $5 bucks)

-and rip the seam on one sleeve 3/4 of the way up.

- use a template similar to these and cut some fabric + felt out in that shape.
(i used felt backing to make the applique a little stiffer for sewing on)

- turn your sewing machine to a low setting 0 or 1 to form a tight stitch.


-sew all around the image on the sleeve of the shirt

-turn inside out and sew sleeve seam (if you have a serger, use it in this step!)

-walla! mustache shirt! i dont have a good picture of the shirt because of slight frustration and time restraints but here's a look like the one i was going for.

- i also made a little mustache knitted hat for Piper's favorite second cousin!
